Carmen is dual qualified, a solicitor in England and Wales, as well as a Spanish Qualified Lawyer (Abogado) in Spain. She holds a LLM in International Commercial Law from Sussex University and a Postgraduate Diploma in European Business from the Canterbury Christ Church University.
Carmen continues to deal with cross-border litigation and commercial matters assisting companies. Among other cases, she is currently involved in defending cases issued in the UK against Foreign Insurers brought, most likely, due to Brexit. Her clients are delighted with her assistance, as due to her language skills, it is more cost effective for the Foreign Insurers as they avoid translation expenses and they also avoid culture clash.
Although she mostly defends litigation claims, she also has as caseload of litigation private clients who are pursuing foreign insurers via the English courts for injuries sustained abroad.
In the last few years, Carmen has also developed her work on the Spanish law side. Her clients are mostly British individuals, but also law firms which she advices on with the Spanish element of their case. She’s able to advise (among other areas) on the following:
- Sale or purchase of Spanish property
- Transfer of Spanish property in Spain
- Spanish probate/ Estate Administration
- Spanish Wills
- Preparing Spanish Power of Attorneys
- Obtaining Spanish non-resident numbers (NIE)
- Certificates of English or Spanish Law
- Liaising with Spanish professionals to smoothly progress in an existing case
- Timeshares in Spain
- Debt collection and Spanish litigation
- Legalisation of documents (apostille)
- Renunciation of inheritance
Carmen has an extended network of international connections all over the work, which makes her a good point of contact if you have any other international issue, as she will be able to assist.
She started her legal career in England in 2000 based in Brighton, specialising in dispute resolution. Her natural enthusiasm for work involving an international dimension soon prompted a career move to London where she joined Irwin Mitchell’s travel litigation team.
Whilst training for her Private Pilot License, Carmen developed a keen interest in aviation law and developed further expertise with City firms Clyde and Co and Gates and Partners (now Kennedys Aviation).
In those firms, Carmen has dealt with a wide range of legal issues including liability and commercial matters for insurance companies and multinationals, with a particular focus on Spain and South America.
With over ten years’ multi-jurisdictional experience with London firms, Carmen joined Mayo Wynne Baxter in 2013 to further develop the firm’s international services, as well as expanding the Spanish law practice.
As well as continuing to be passionate about aviation, Carmen also enjoys cycling, martial arts, dancing, travelling, and going in adventures with her children.
"Now the case is closed I want to express our very grateful thanks to you for all the work you have done so efficiently over the past year to help us in the sale of our house in San José, as well as sorting out the tax and financial problems in Spain.
We are very pleased with the outcome, and will recommend you highly to anyone who needs such services in future. Thank you again"

‘‘I want to thank you from the both of us.
You have been ever so helpful and rapid in all correspondence that I've been a bit blown away at times with just how quick you have been!
We really would've been lost without your help and guidance and for that, we will always
