We will explain your civil partnerships rights so you can become a family
The Family Law Team at Mayo Wynne Baxter understands how important the Civil Partnership Act is for your relationship. In December 2005 the Act came into affect and Brighton was one of first places in the UK to host a registration ceremony.
Since then, our expert team have developed experience in the Civil Partnership Act so that you and your partner can enjoy you life together and know that the advice you’ll receive will help make this possible.
Understanding civil partnership law
Once you have registered your Civil Partnership, you become a family. There are strict guidelines as to who can and cannot enter into a partnership, and these are broadly in line with the rules governing marriage, with the obvious gender exception.
The differences between civil partnership and marriage are few. Like a marriage, a Civil Partnership can only be ended by a court order, in the same way as a divorce. This is known as dissolution. The Civil Partnership Act also recognises foreign sex marriages, but only as Civil Partnerships.
When assisting clients in this area, the three main aspects of your civil partnerships rights that we would discuss are:
- Financial claims
- Children
- Wills and death
Our experienced team acknowledge that Civil Partnerships can be a complicated area and that many clients find the law confusing. Our Family Law experts are experienced in this field and regularly advise clients in relation to civil partnership law.
