MP Visits Hove Park School for a Lesson in Law

Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove and Portslade, visited Hove Park School today (June18) to hear more about the Lawyers in Schools project run by Sussex law firm Mayo Wynne Baxter.

For the past 10 weeks, a team of solicitors from Mayo Wynne Baxter has been teaching the legal elements of the Citizenship curriculum to Year 10 students, covering subjects like police powers, drug legislation and human rights.

James Roochove, trainee solicitor and project co-ordinator at Mayo Wynne Baxter, explained further: “The lessons are great fun. They present a unique and interactive way to communicate with young people who wouldn’t normally have access to lawyers. We’ve got to know the individual students and, if the lively debates we’ve had are anything to go by, there are definitely some budding barristers in the class.”

“Lawyers for Schools is a really worthwhile project and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We’re delighted that Mike is supporting the scheme and that he has taken time out of his busy schedule to come and hear about it today.”

Mike met with members of the Citizenship class who told him about their experience of Lawyers for Schools and questioned him about his role as their new MP.

After the visit, Mr Weatherley commented: “One of my top priorities for my constituents is to ensure that everyone gets the best education possible. The Lawyers for Schools scheme is a fantastic educational initiative that the students at Hove Park School have clearly found stimulating and immensely enjoyable.

“James and the team at Mayo Wynne Baxter should be congratulated as they have all put an enormous amount of time and resources into running these lessons. This is a fine example of a business supporting its local community, which is something I strongly believe we should all do. I’m sure that James, Lisa and their colleagues have inspired future generations of lawyers who may otherwise not have thought about Law as a career.”
