On Saturday 3rd December Mayo Wynne Baxter sponsored a fundraising event for Chestnut Tree House at the Metropole in Brighton. The event was attended by over 600 of the county’s most influencial people (including some of our Partners) for an evening of dinner, dancing and raising money.

Entertainment came from top magician Paul Zenon, Royal Variety performer Alex Poulter and Mooky the Clown from Cirque du Soleil amongst others. Mitch Winehouse (yes, Amy’s Dad) was also there singing with the backing of the band Funkification.

On the night Chestnut Tree managed to raise a little over £221,000 which was amazing.

This is the second big fundraising event that we have sponsored the year. The Best of British lunch at the Grand in Brighton back in June raised over £177,000 making the total raised from these two MWB sponsored events at around £400,000!

It costs a little under £7,000 per day for Chestnut Tree House to provide the essential services to the people of Sussex so if you feel able to help out with a little donation (even £1 will help) then visit our Family Footprints campaign page.

Argus Angels Awards 2011

As you may know, one of the many strings to the Mayo Wynne Baxter bow is that we are specialists in media and creative industries  law. As a consequence we felt that it was important to show our our firm commitment to the world class creativity that Brighton and the surrounding areas has.

The Argus Angel Awards were introduced in 2007 to award artistic excellence during the Brighton Festival and Brighton Festival Fringe. From theatre and dance to music, live literature and exhibitions – The Argus Angels are presented to artists and performers who truly stand out from the crowd.

Back now for their fifth year we were proud to be Sponsors of these unique awards. The Argus team of critics were out reviewing events night and day to make sure they didn’t miss any performance worthy of a handsome golden statue. Based on the famous Herald Angels of The Edinburgh Festival, the trophies are carved by hand and carefully flown down from Scotland in the suitcase of the sculptor himself.

Kim Protheroe, The Argus Features Editor, said: “These awards are for the truly exceptional performances and events we see during the festival period”.

We are proud to announce that for the 4th year running Mayo Wynne Baxter are involved with the Sussex Food & Drink Awards, sponsoring the Best Sussex Eating Experience category.

The Sussex Food and Drink Awards are the only awards that highlight, recognise and support Sussex farmers and producers and the businesses which sell and promote their produce in the local market place.

Sussex is blessed with a wealth of glorious food, from the beautiful green downs and its coastal waters to the huge number of creative and hard-working producers and manufacturers in the county, who are creating award-winning food and drink every day.

The launch of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2011/12 at the South of England Show on Thursday 9 June (attended by me and our Managing Partner, Chris Randall) marked the beginning of the voting so I’d like to call on you all to single out those you feel are worthy of these accolades.

Brighton Marathon 2011Neither myself nor my husband Grant had ever run before, so signing up for the Brighton Marathon 2011 with the Mayo Wynne Baxter Corporate Team was always going to be something of a challenge.  After much encouragement from our three sporty teenage kids, of course we had to rise to that challenge.  With Chestnut Tree as our charity partner, the fund raising started in earnest and we are so proud, along with the other team members to have raised over £2,200 for the charity, which is absolutely fantastic.

The months leading up to the big day on April 10 2011 involved many, many hours of evenings and weekend training which built up progressively as we counted down the weeks.   This was a massive time commitment which couldn’t be shied away from if we were to have any hope of running the marathon successfully.   I can remember saying to one of my colleagues and fellow, more experienced runners “I ran 2.5 miles this weekend!” and she commented on how soon we would be running 10 miles, which at the time we just could not  imagine.  Before we knew it, we were running 10 miles at the weekend, then 15, then 20.  Unfortunately Grant suffered a knee injury and was unable to train for the last four weeks prior to the race which, after months of running up and down the Cuckoo Line together was going to be a real wrench for both of us not to be able to run together on the day.  The knee started to get a little better in the week of the race, so we went over the start line together on what was a beautiful sunny day, with the rest of the team.  The atmosphere on race day was truly brilliant, with crowds lining the route – even out at Shoreham which we had been warned would be the hardest part to run.  Everyone along the route was so encouraging you couldn’t help but smile on your way around – and seeing Noddy, Buzz Lightyear, soldiers with full back packs, firemen carrying their full body weight and even Spongebob Squarepants along the way made it all the more atmospheric.  A truly great effort from everyone involved, with all of our team making it over the finish line.

So, we are all now the very proud owners of Marathon medals, lovely silvery blankets, but most importantly very elated to have raised such a great amount of money for such a fantastic cause, thanks to wonderful family, friends and colleagues.

Will we do it again?….never say never!

Brighton Marathon 2011

My bright red forehead is testament to the brilliant sunshine that bathed Brighton yesterday during the 2nd Brighton Marathon.

From my vantage point I had a fantastic view of those runners who had endured the glorious April weather and 26.2 miles of road pounding to reach the finish.

Amongst the 10,000 runners who started the race were a number of teams running in the Mayo Wynne Baxter Corporate Challenge, all trying to prove that their business is the fastest in Sussex.

We are waiting with baited breath for the Marathon officials to announce which company won but I am pleased to say that Mayo Wynne Baxter Team did us proud and all finshed.

There will be undoubtedly be some sore muscles around the office today but it was all worth it as the team raised over £2,200 for our nominated charity Chestnut Tree House.

Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in Sussex and they care for life-limited children and young adults aged 0-19, and provides support for their families.

We are proud to be sponsors of the All SaintsMeads Music Festival, a completely new venture to bring a series of Classical Music concerts to Eastbourne. The venue for the Festival is the delightful All Saints Chapel just off the seafront in Meads. The festival will take place in May each year and it is proposed to hold the concerts on each Sunday afternoon in May. For the inaugural Festival five concerts will be held commencing on the 1st May 2011.

Eastbourne has a tradition of good classical music stretching back over the years from the Palm Court orchestra which were resident in The Grand Hotel to the visit of Debussy in 1905 when he is reported to h ave completed his work La Mer. Nearby Friston was the home to a much neglected English composer Frank Bridge. The London Philarmonic have a residency in Eastbourne and play to capacity audiences at the Congress theatre. It is with this background that we wish to develop and promote the availability of top quality music in Eastbourne. The cultural offering of Eastbourne has huge potential and with the highly acclaimed Towner gallery for visual arts there is an opportunity to enhance this cultural offering with a Classical Music Festival. In fact the whole of Sussex has a rich cultural identity and attracts visitors from all over the world to it’s prestigious venues such as Glyndebourne Opera House and Charleston Farmhouse.

In order to give the Festival an identity of it’s own we have chosen specific aims which we want to address in our programme planning and concert promotion. Our aims are as follows:-

  • To bring international artists to Eastbourne
  • To promote and present young artists who have been recognised as outstanding in their chosen field.
  • To include local talented musicians and provide them with an opportunity for performance within the festival programme.
  • To attract a wide range of visitors and promote classical music to new audiences.
  • To involve the local people of Eastbourne and Meads so the festival develops and maintains a community spirit.
  • To support and utilise the significant facility in All Saints Chapel.

Our festival will be for non profit making and any surplus monies will be used to develop the artistic integrity of our concerts through facilities, artists fees and programme development. In order for such a venture to take place we will need financial support from sponsors, time and talent from a dedicated committee, a team of volunteers and assistance with administration from local authorities.

The 2011 preliminary programme has been put together and artists contacted but will depend on financial support and Festival costs.

Crowning Sussex Food Heroes

Celebrations were in full flow last Thursday (27 January) at this year’s spectacular Sussex Food & Drink Awards ceremony, where eight of Sussex’s top food and drink producers were hailed as local heroes as they received their trophies at the East Sussex National Golf Resort & Spa near Uckfield.

Thousands of people voted for hundreds of Sussex food and drink businesses and individuals in the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2010/11, which is run by Natural PR and this year celebrated its fifth anniversary!

Said Clive Beddall OBE, Chairman of the Judges: “The Sussex Food & Drink Awards celebrate the exceptional standards of quality and innovation that have taken the county’s producers into the top half of the UK’s Premier League for locally produced food and drink.

This competition has raised the profile of an ever-growing variety of products from across the county and what has pleased me most this year is that more and more Sussex hotels, pubs and restaurants are highlighting local produce on their menus.”

Over 200 leaders in the food, drink and farming industries gathered for what is now dubbed ‘the Sussex foodie event of the year’.  Guests were treated to a wonderful ‘Sussex bubbly and ale reception’, sponsored by Harvey & Son and Carr Taylor, followed by a stunning seven-course banquet.  The special fifth anniversary menu was created by AA rosette chef Andy Wiles and featured an array of Sussex goodies, including:  local Sussex rabbit rillette; Harvey’s beer battered line-caught Sussex pollock; a trio of Sussex venison; layered Sussex blackberry fool; a selection of local cheeses and Sussex ground coffee with chocolate truffles and mini cup cakes.

As fireworks lit up the banquet hall, Paula Seager, MD of Natural PR which organise the awards, said:  “Tonight has been a true celebration and we are so proud that these awards have played a part in building the reputation of Sussex as one of the best food destinations in the country and home to some of the most creative and exciting producers of exquisite food and drink.

As ever the awards would not be possible without the support from all our wonderful sponsors and the many great organisations and individuals involved and we hope that we can continue to make these awards a success for many years to come.”
